Assistive Technology for Computers

The library has special equipment on hand for patrons with disabilities. However, it is not possible to have technology that meets the needs of every type of disability. Here is a list of assistive technology for computers and computer workstations available in the library system:

1. There is an adjustable table at the Central Library's assistive technology workstation that can assist patrons with mobility impairments or who use wheelchairs.

2. Software to enlarge screen images can assist patrons with low vision and learning disabilities.

3. Patrons with low vision, blindness and learning disabilities can use a speech output system.

4. Braille conversion software and a Braille printer can assist patrons who are blind.

5. A trackball can assist those who have difficulty controlling a mouse.

6. Optical Character Recognition software and a scanner can provide access to print material for visually impaired individuals and individuals with learning disabilities.

7. Magnification systems (CCTV) can provide access to print material for individuals with low vision and individuals with disabilities, and can provide an environment where low vision individuals can fill out forms and perform other writing tasks.
