The Massachusetts Library Association's Intellectual Freedom Committee has chosen John Landino's sculptures on display in October at the Pine Point and Sixteen Acres Branch Libraries as the winner of the Banned Books Display contest. Branch Librarian Doris Madsen planned the event and worked with Mr. Landino in highlighting his unconventional artwork during the month of October. In conjunction with the American Library Association's Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read, two of our branch libraries, Sixteen Acres Branch, 1187 Parker Street and Pine Point Branch, 204 Boston Road, hosted an exhibit of sculptures by artist John Landino. Incorporating actual books into his welded sculptures, he celebrates freedom of expression in a very unconventional manner! Mr. Landino's work was on display at each location from September 26 - October 24. Funding for this program was provided through the generosity of the Friends of the Springfield Library.
